Overview

Zero Point, also known as Yumesamdong, is a breathtaking high-altitude destination situated at 15,300 feet (4,664 m). It is famously called "Zero Point" because it marks the literal end of the motorable civilian road; beyond this point lies the rugged Indo-China border accessible only to military personnel. Located 23–25 km beyond Yumthang Valley, the landscape is a stark, majestic wilderness of snow-covered peaks, grey rocks, and the confluence of three glacial rivers. It is one of the few places in India where snow can be found even in the height of summer.

Smart Tips

Permit Requirements: A Protected Area Permit (PAP) must be arranged at least one day in advance through an authorized Sikkim tour operator.

Foreign Nationals: Traditionally, foreign tourists are not allowed to visit Zero Point due to its proximity to the international border; access is usually restricted to Yumthang Valley.

Acclimatize First: Never try to visit Zero Point directly from Gangtok; spend a night in Lachung (8,800 ft) to help your body adjust.

Thermos Hack: Carry a thermos of hot ginger tea; drinking it slowly at the top helps prevent sudden nausea and cold.

Popcorn Trick: Chewing on popcorn from roadside stalls helps your inner ears adjust to rapid altitude changes.

Cash Only: There are no ATMs beyond Mangan; ensure you have enough cash for driver surcharges and snacks.
