Tsomgo (Changu) Lake
Highlights
Overview
Tsomgo Lake, popularly known as Changu Lake, is a mesmerising oval-shaped glacial lake situated at an altitude of 12,310 feet (3,753 m). Located about 38–40 km from Gangtok on the road to Nathu La, it is revered as a sacred site by local Sikkimese people who believe its waters possess healing properties. The lake is famous for its colour-changing surface, shifting from shimmering turquoise in spring to deep inky tones in autumn. It is surrounded by steep, snow-clad mountains and serves as a vital stop on the old Silk Route, offering visitors unique experiences like yak rides and a trip on India's highest cable car (ropeway).

How to Reach
Smart Tips
For Indian Nationals: A Protected Area Permit (PAP) is required. You must provide a valid government ID (Voter ID, Passport, or Driving License) and two passport-sized photos. Aadhar Cards are no longer accepted for this permit.
For Foreign Nationals: A Protected Area Permit (PAP) is required and must be arranged through a registered travel agency for groups of two or more. Solo foreign travellers are generally not permitted.
Permit Processing: Most permits are processed one day in advance through authorized tour operators in Gangtok.
Altitude Sickness: Since the lake is at 12,300 ft, travellers may experience shortness of breath or dizziness; carry portable oxygen cylinders if needed.
Weather Closures: Access can be restricted immediately during heavy snowfall or landslides; always check latest updates from Sikkim Tourism before heading out.
Medical Facility: Small first-aid stations are maintained by the Indian Army nearby; major facilities are back in Gangtok.
Emergency Contact: 112 (Statewide Emergency).
Layered Clothing: Even in summer, the wind chill at the lake is significant. Wear heavy woollens and waterproof jackets.
The "Head" of the Lake: The name "Tsomgo" comes from the Tibetan Tso (lake) and Mgo (head), literally meaning the "Source of the Lake".
Yak Photos: If you don't want a full ride, you can often pay a smaller fee (approx. ₹50) just to sit on a decorated yak for a photo.
Nathula Combo: Most tourists combine Tsomgo Lake with visits to Baba Mandir and Nathula Pass (only for Indians) on the same day trip
