Overview

Nathula Pass, situated at a staggering altitude of 14,140 feet (4,310 m), is one of the most significant mountain passes in the Himalayas. It serves as a major corridor between India and China and was historically part of the ancient Silk Road. Visitors can witness the international border marked by barbed wires and massive iron gates, often seeing soldiers from both nations stationed just meters apart. The journey from Gangtok is an experience in itself, winding through dramatic mountain landscapes and alpine vegetation

Smart Tips

Permit Requirements: A Protected Area Permit (PAP) must be arranged one day in advance through a registered Sikkim Tourism agency.

Documents: Valid ID (Voter ID, Passport, or DL) and two photos. Aadhar and PAN cards are not accepted for this permit.

Foreign Nationals: Strictly not allowed beyond Tsomgo Lake/Baba Mandir

Altitude Sickness: At 14,000+ feet, oxygen levels are significantly lower. Carry camphor or small portable oxygen cans if you have breathing issues.

Age Restriction: Children below 5 years are generally not permitted due to high-altitude risks.

Nearest Hospital: STNM Hospital Gangtok (~56 km). The Indian Army provides basic first-aid at the pass.

Emergency Contact: 112 / 03592-202022 (Sadar PS)

Army Canteen: Visit the army-run canteen for hot tea, Maggi, and popcorn. It's a great spot to warm up.

Photography: Strictly prohibited near military installations and the border gate. Respect the signage.

The "Head" Wrap: Wear heavy woollens, gloves, and a cap even in summer; the wind chill is extreme.

The Circuit: Nathula is usually visited as part of a "Three Point" tour including Tsomgo Lake and Baba Harbhajan Singh Mandir
