Overview

Rainbow Falls, locally known as Indreni Falls (Indreni means "rainbow" in Nepali), is a spectacular hidden gem tucked away in the Kalej Valley Tea Estate. This 80-foot waterfall gushes down a steep rock face into a natural pool at its base. On sunny days, the sunlight hitting the suspended mist creates a vibrant rainbow near the pool, giving the falls its name. Located about 14–15 km from Darjeeling town, it is a tranquil escape far from the main tourist crowds, surrounded by lush green mountains and heritage tea gardens established in 1858.

Smart Tips

The Golden Window: Visit between 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM on a clear, sunny day for the best chance of seeing the rainbow formation.

Vehicle Choice: Do not attempt to drive a small car or sedan to the entry gate; hire a 4-wheel drive vehicle or a high-clearance SUV from Rangbull.

Birding Bonus: Keep your ears open for the Kalij Pheasant, after which the Kalej Valley was named, along with other Himalayan birds like the Rufous Sibia.

Nearby Picnic: Mandir Gaon, just a short walk from the local resorts, is a quiet spot perfect for a village lunch or nature walk.
