Batasia Loop & Gorkha War Memorial
Highlights
Overview
The Batasia Loop is a world-renowned engineering marvel of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR), created in 1919 to help the toy train navigate a steep 140-foot descent through a 360-degree spiral. At the centre of this lush, landscaped garden stands the Gorkha War Memorial, sanctified in 1995 to honour the brave soldiers from Darjeeling who sacrificed their lives in various wars since India's independence. The site offers a panoramic 360-degree view of the Darjeeling hill town and the snow-capped peaks of the Eastern Himalayas, including the majestic Mt. Kanchenjunga

How to Reach
Smart Tips
Toy Train Timing: If you aren't riding the train, check the Joy Ride schedule so you can be there to photograph the steam engine as it loops through the garden.
Sanctity of Memorial: The War Memorial is a sacred site; avoid smoking, tobacco, or loud noise while near the cenotaph and statue.
Winter Chills: Even if it’s sunny, the "Windy Place" lives up to its name; bring a light jacket or shawl.
Local Markets: The Batasia Market just outside the exit is great for buying woollens and handmade curios.
