Overview

Vishram Ghat is the most significant of the 25 ghats lining the banks of the Yamuna River in Mathura. The name Vishram (meaning "rest") stems from the powerful Hindu legend that Lord Krishna and Balram rested here after defeating the tyrant King Kansa. This holy site serves as the traditional starting and ending point for the Brij 84-Kos Parikrama (circumambulation). It is a masterpiece of stone masonry, featuring grand arches and ancient temples dedicated to deities like Yamuna-Krishna, Mukut Temple, and Murali Manohar.

Smart Tips

Monkey Menace: Be extremely cautious with sunglasses, mobile phones, and food; the monkeys here are very aggressive.

Slippery Steps: The stone steps (ghats) can be very slippery due to algae and water; walk carefully during aarti.

Catch the Aarti Early: Arrive 30 minutes before sunset to secure a good spot on the steps or book a boat to watch the aarti from the river for a unique perspective.

Morning Boat Ride: Morning boat rides are often cheaper and more peaceful than the evening rush.

Spiritual Bath: Many devotees take a holy dip in the Yamuna; use the designated areas for safety.

Famous Snacks: Don't miss the local street food stalls outside the entrance for Mathura's famous Pedas and Kachoris.
