Maa Sankata Devi Temple
Highlights
Overview
The Maa Sankata Devi Temple, located near the famous Scindia Ghat, is one of Varanasi's most revered shrines dedicated to the "Goddess of Danger" (Sankata meaning "danger" or "trouble"). Constructed in the 18th century by the King of Baroda, it is unique as it is believed to be the only temple in India dedicated solely to this form of the Goddess. According to local lore and the Skanda Purana, the Pandava brothers worshipped here during their exile to seek protection. The temple is known for its peaceful courtyard featuring a massive Banyan tree that shelters smaller shrines. Devotees believe that a visit here dissolves all life's troubles and fears.
