Overview

The Shree Jagannatha Temple is the spiritual heart of Odisha and one of the four sacred Char Dham pilgrimage sites in India. Rebuilt in the 12th century by King Anantavarman Chodaganga Deva of the Eastern Ganga Dynasty, it is a masterpiece of Kalinga architecture. The temple is dedicated to Lord Jagannath (a form of Vishnu/Krishna), his elder brother Balabhadra, and sister Subhadra. Unlike most Hindu shrines, the deities here are carved from neem wood (Daru) and are ceremoniously replaced every 12 to 19 years in a ritual known as Nabakalebara. The temple is also famous for its "shadowless" structure and the world's largest kitchen, which serves Mahaprasad cooked in earthen pots stacked over each other.
